Hear from volunteers who have experienced the life-changing power of community-led service in Uganda. These are their stories of growth, connection, and lasting impact.

"Teaching children to read in Kampala was the most rewarding experience of my life. Seeing their faces light up when they finished their first book made every moment worthwhile."
I spent 8 weeks running reading circles in primary schools around Kampala. The children's enthusiasm was infectious, and by the end of my placement, we had established three permanent reading corners with over 500 books. The local teachers I worked with became dear friends, and we still video call monthly to discuss the program's progress.

"I came to plant trees but left having planted roots. The community welcomed me as family, and together we created something that will benefit generations to come."
Working alongside community members in Jinja to establish tree nurseries taught me more about sustainability and community organizing than any textbook could. We planted over 2,000 trees and trained 30 community members in nursery management. The project continues to thrive, and I'm planning my return visit next year.

"As a librarian back home, I thought I knew everything about organizing books. But the creativity and resourcefulness of the Ugandan teachers I worked with taught me so much more."
I helped set up a library system in a rural school in Jinja District. We cataloged 1,500 books, built shelving from local materials, and trained teachers on library management. The principal told me it was the first proper library the school had ever had. Seeing students line up excitedly for their library cards was unforgettable.

"These women didn't need saving—they needed opportunity. I was honored to share my tailoring skills, but they taught me about resilience, community, and joy."
I spent 10 weeks training women in tailoring and business skills in Mbarara. We started with 15 women and by the end, they had formed a cooperative, secured their first bulk order, and were training new members. The bonds we formed transcended language and culture. They named their cooperative 'Tugende Together' which means 'Let's Go Together.'

"As a medical student, I learned more about community health in 12 weeks in Uganda than in years of classroom study. This experience shaped my career path."
I conducted health education workshops in Mbale District, focusing on malaria prevention and maternal health. Working with local health workers, we reached over 1,000 families. The community's eagerness to learn and implement health practices was inspiring. I'm now specializing in global health because of this experience.

"Nutrition is healthcare. Seeing children able to focus in class after a nutritious meal reminded me why I became a dietitian."
I worked with school feeding programs in Gulu, helping to plan nutritious meals within tight budgets and training kitchen staff on food safety. We also started a school garden that now provides fresh vegetables daily. The improvement in student attendance and performance was measurable and moving.
